This is the second book in the Alice Vega series and after reading the first look, I feel left out. I needed the background. Some novels in a series are great as stand alone books, but this isn't one of them. There is a lot of references to the previous book in just the beginning pages that not knowing what transpired is almost a distraction.

However, the writing draws you in. The first chapter is written from the perspective of the young girl that is part of a human trafficking ring. You feel her fear & her fight to survive. And when Alice Vega shows up, it is too late for "our girl."

This is when the back story from the previous book would be helpful in understanding the motivations of not only Alice, but her partner & his daughter. While there are glimpses into the background, I still felt like I was missing out on a huge chunk of the story.
