*Thank you to Penguin Random House and BookishFirst for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say I am very shocked about The Invocations I really loved this one. I had no prior knowledge about the author or the book. I was intrigued after reading a sneak peek the story revolves around three women. Zara who has been reeling after her sister’s brutal murder, Emer a witch in practice with a very sad past and Jude an emo rebel whose father Lawrence is a powerful ruthless businessman. The story itself was a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. Zara would do anything to get her sister Savannah back even going as far as raising her sister from death.

So when she meets Emer a witch she believes she has finally found her answer. Emer has her own demons literally and figuratively. Bael a demon has been bound to her for as long as she could remember. Jude however is the opposite of the two other women. Growing up with without having to want for anything with dealing with a very wealthy overbearing family. The three women become intertwined when a series of women end up missing and murdered. With all of them having one thing in common they were witches.

This book had very gory parts in it for it being “YA” that’s for sure. The killer removed chunks of the victims flesh. Stealing the flesh of the victims creates invocations symbols that steals powers from the victims. Zara, Emer and Jude are now bound together to not only hunt down a killer but also face their own issues. Zara with her grief and Jude with her family and demons of her own. She sold her soul to a demon in exchange for freedom-something she has regretted ever since.

As far as the characters themselves I really liked Zara and Emer but Jude bugged me. She was arrogant and rude it makes sense in one respect. Her family is a bunch of cold hearted psychopaths but still I found her off putting. The identity of the killer was surprising to me. All my theories were wrong. I loved being caught off guard. This one was very unexpected in a good way.
