After I read House of Hollow last year, I was very excited to see the author returning with another magic YA novel. I have a soft spot for witches and mayhem and this book has plenty of both. Oh, I’ll also add I can not get enough of this cover artist. I swear I’ll read every book he’s done a cover for because he’s so talented and I love them! I’m guessing the girl up front is Jude, the one to the left is Zara, and the one to the right is Emer.

The beginning was slow, and I saw a lot of other reviewers say the same thing. It did pick up for me around the half way mark however, and I was fully invested after that. I really liked our 3 main girls and the murder mystery was getting interesting after more clues coming up. The big twist I saw coming a mile away, but it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the rest of the story. It actually made me sad.

Emer, Jude, and Zara were sympathetic MCs that I wanted to follow and for them to get what wanted in the end. Jude to untether herself to the demon she stupidly made a deal with that’s killing her from the inside out, Zara to bring her sister back from the dead, and Emer to find the men who murdered her family in cold blood and made her live in the woods for 3 years as a child.

I like the idea of binding yourself to a demon in order to gain any magic ability you want. So what if it snacks on your soul and you lose a few years, you can have a cool power! And the fact that only women can make contracts because demons don’t trust men.

The end was bittersweet and adorable. I actually teared up a bit. If you enjoyed House of Hollow or even think you might enjoy it, I do recommend this one. While the first half was slow, it was worth it to stick around till the end.
