Definitely my favorite YA release of 2024, Krystal Sutherland’s second YA gothic fantasy Invocations has everything. It was fun, fast-paced, original, spooky, and full of a cast I loved from start to finish. The witchy elements were tastefully done and the right amount of grit and guts was present with each character. The plot twists were awesome, I didn’t see them coming at all. What I really like about Sutherland’s writing is the absolutely rich and lush storybuilding. Only she can take a disgusting setting - such as a decrepit mansion - and turn it into a space you wish you could see for yourself. Throughout the novel I could actually picture myself in these settings because of her storytelling abilities. I really didn’t think she could top House of Hollow; but here we are. Absolutely 5/5 stars. Definitely add this one to your list.
