I loved the vibe of "The Invocations"! The prologue starts off strong, in London with a girl walking home late at night and using magic to avoid the man she notices following her, only for him to appear inside her house before the scene ends. This unnamed girl tells us that men can't use magic in this world, which is an interesting concept.

We get POVs from Emer, Zara, and Jude, which I assume will converge at some point. Emer is a vagabond witch living on the Oxford campus and pretending to be a student while hiding from some great (but unknown to us) enemy.

Zara is a former good girl living with her garbage person of an uncle and frequently stealing books and spell materials in desperate attempts to resurrect her dead sister.

Jude grew up in an infamous and wealthy family, before getting herself exiled for a drug addiction she doesn't have. What she does have are 3 demons tethered to her soul, rotting her body from the inside out, and therefore a very strong motivation to find a witch. So far, her search has been entertaining, but fruitless.

The descriptions in this book are unique and vivid, and the tone has a very interesting gothic but modern vibe to it. I'm excited to see where this leads and to learn more about the magic system here, as it seems unlike anything else I've read!
