I was so hoping that this first look would give me a peek at something new and exciting coming down the pipes in YA lit, but sadly it's more of the same -- a lot of foul language and material that tries to rope teens in with the shock value of it all. I'm not opposed to reading novels with foul language, and I'm not opposed to reading LGBTQ lit, but at this point our YA authors need to come up with something fresh. Yikes! The concept of this novel seems great -- a high school jock who has an "enhanced ability" which allows him to feel extreme empathy. I'm sure the character of Dr. Bright will add a layer of complexity with her insight and input. All that being said, this one is a hard pass for me.
