The Immortalists begins in 1969, with the four Gold siblings seeking out a mysterious woman who is said to know the day you'll die. After some searching the children find her apartment and, one by one, drift inside to hear their fortunes. Three of them are upset or angered by what they have heard, but Varya learns she will live to a comfortable old age. Even though they scoff at the prophecies, the Golds can't help but let them shape the coming decades of their lives.

Benjamin's writing is vivid and filled with colorful imagery. Each of the four Gold siblings is distinct without settling into archetype or cliche. Religion and sexuality are early themes that look to be explored in later chapters. I'm already quite invested in the Gold children and curious to see how each sibling deals with the fortune teller's prophecy (and if those dates come true!).
