I was excited to read this novel based on the location of New York's Lower East Side, and the premise of knowing the date of your death. I loved the idea of a group of siblings visiting a fortune teller and basing many of their life decisions upon her predictions.
Unfortunately, the novel left much to be desired. The story turned out to read like a bunch of superficial characters dropped into cliche historical events with no real substance. The naive gay brother runs away to San Francisco to become a pole dancer? So lame and corny! This book just plods along and seems to have no real point. I wish the writing lived up to the beautiful cover and setting, but I had no desire to finish this one.
