I liked the first half of this book a lot. It focused on the youngest two siblings, while the last half focused on the older two siblings. The first half is fun and light; it's set in a defining period in modern American history. The characters are experience these major American social movements firsthand. It puts you right in the heart of the setting; you feel like you're in 1980's San Francisco, you feel like you know the minor characters, you feel like you're experiencing the twists and turns of the major characters lives. The second half was heavy and dull for me. It just felt like a boring story about grown-ups going about their lives. It lacked the adventure, the depth of characters, and the interesting setting that the first half had. Overall, I'm glad I read it. I would read more from Chloe Benjamin hoping she can recapture the magic of the first half of this book.
