Within two sentences, we are reading about Varya's pubic hair. The third tells us of her breasts and describes her nipples. This is a thirteen-year-old girl being described in completely inappropriate and gratuitous language. Her pubic hair and breasts have ZERO to do with the story, thus they are described for mere shock value. When an author needs to resort to sexual language to describe a barely teenager, I know I'm not going to like the book.
I can't say the First Look went downhill from there as it was already pretty bad by sentence four, but it certainly didn't get any better. The first chapters' story rambles all over the place with digressions and jumps back and forth in time.
