A Family Drama Disguised as Literary Fiction

The Immortalists is a story of grief and self-fulfilling prophecies.

A trip to a psychic who predicts the date of death for the Gold siblings kicks off the plot. This is literary fiction and it is definitely a family drama. Despite that—for family drama is among my least favorite niche genres—this novel really packs a punch.

The sibling whose journey spoke to me the most was Vayra who researches longevity. While the book seems to be an answer to the question from a 90s dinner party book (you’ll have to trust me when I say this was totally a thing—deep questions meant to encourage deep conversations): which would you rather know, the date or cause of your death?

The Gold family gets the dates of their deaths and then proceed to have many different reactions to the info and Vayra’s seemed the most noble to me. Just my interpretation and really, is there any “right” response?

I did enjoy the thought experiment nature of the novel.
