The book starts off in the 60s on the Lower East Side of New York City. This was a very rough and tumble area back then yet the author describes it more like Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco. I think the characters would have been more cynical in the beginning rather than portrayed as on the cusp of enlightenment. Nevertheless it seems a very interesting sojourn exploring the concept of manifest destiny...
