I was pulled in this First Impression of Chloe Benjamin's The Immortalists because of the beautiful graphics of the novel. But I didn't expect to find something so enthralling, full of poetic mystery and fairytale-like lyricism. The writing style of the novel is extremely eloquent and the four brothers - Varya, Daniel, Klara and Simon - are all very interesting in their specificities. There something of the fairy tale here that works at a very deep level, we are walking on a thin line between reality and magic. I think this is a reading that anybody who read and enjoyed The Fishermen, by Chigozie Obioma should dive into!
The fates of the four Gold siblings are forever changed when, as children, they visit a diviner who can claims to be able to predict the exact date you are going to die. How would they conduct their lives in this knowledge? Is the diviner right? And are they going to run into their own predicted deaths? Or will they manage to escape this terrible prediction, as the title might suggest? So many questions that demand further reading of the novel!!
