I was initially very excited to receive my copy of The High Season. And then I read and read and only finished the book because I wanted to be fair. I was terribly disappointed. This seemed to me to be a poor version of The Great Gatsby.
Ruthie, Mike and Jem were a likable family. Living divorced but not divorced has it’s problems. The characters were clearly defined. You can’t help but hope that in the end Ruthie will find her way. She must have felt like the whole world was against her.
My favorite part of this book was the watch. It was clever to see it appear in a box of junk jewelry. And then it became an integral part of the story as it traveled from person to person. Was it worth anything? And then, where would it end up?
