The clingy, leather-like Cat Woman uniform on the cover of The Hermes Protocol is sure to catch one's eye. Get ready for a futuristic world on a different planet with flying limousines going 186 kilometers an hour (about 185 miles per hour in the USA) and augmented-reality people, but there is enough of today's world to pique one's curiosity. There are ads for Mercedes cars and Coach handbags - and, oh yes, jokes about staying safe not being a fun way to live are NOT considered funny. So you know right away that there will be some danger. The protagonist is a burglar who can suppress fatigue in the body, cling like a gecko to ceilings, and deploy fiber-optic cameras from a pinky finger. Despite the new world setting, couples still are intimate, and their physical attractions allow this burglar to get started on burglary activities. Judging from the preview pages, this book seems like one that would appeal to fans of books like Blade Runner, Trouble and Her Friends by Melissa Scott and a dash of Rogue Heart by Axie Oh.
