A good read for getting into the sci-fi genre

I am not a huge science fiction reader because often it is too technical for me and I end up skimming a lot of it. However, I feel like this book is the perfect for a sci-fi newbie. It's science-y without being too technical. There is a still a story-like plot element that draws the reader in.
