I felt spoiled when I opened up the 87-page long ’First Look’ of ”The Haunted” until I got to the end of it and realized I absolutely have to read more and I can't just yet!
Hendricks is undoubtedly living in the house of many a person’s nightmares, or at least one little girl’s death, and as the new girl in town, she seems to be finding this out gradually through her friends at school. Steele House doesn't seem to be an ordinary house by any measure, and not only is it hiding a dark secret, so is Hendricks, one that sent her family packing from Philadelphia and to this tiny town of Drearford.
I happen to read a lot of horror fiction and love a great scare, so I love finding creepy books that suck me in (even better when that's done very quickly). This definitely succeeded. Here's one reason: I probably would have fallen victim to this house thanks to the cat at the beginning (I would have gone into the basement too).
From the ’draw’ of that little kitty mew to the varied bunch of characters that appeared to be shaping up in just a few chapters, plus the obvious dark secrets of both Hendricks as well as the house her family has come to live in, ”The Haunted” is a book I refuse to miss. And I know that Danielle Vega has the chops to make this a thoroughly chilling and clever read.
