I really wanted to like "The Half Sister" by Sandie Jones. I was drawn in immediately by the choice of present verb tense. That's rare enough that it caught my attention. In some ways it actually pulled my attention away from the story at first because I was so intrigued. Once I was able to draw my attention back though I couldn't get myself engaged in the content of the novel. Just wasn't for me.
