The lives of sisters Kate and Lauren are portrayed in the inimitable way that only Sandie Jones can do, presenting a carrot stick to us readers and having us chase it to find out where the real trove of carrots are kept. Kate is having difficulty with infertility while Lauren is the mother of three, a reluctant stay at hone mom who has the life that Kate wants. Simon is Lauren’s controlling and somewhat abusive husband. I strongly suspect that we will find out more of Simon’s inability to control his rage when we read the book. Rose, the mother of Lauren and Kate, is a doting grandmother, a woman who is trying to present herself as the well-put together widow with a family luncheon each Sunday. Not present in this first look but certainly a lingering sprit is Harry, the father who seems to play a central role in the conflict between Kate and Lauren. When Jess suddenly appears on the scene, it is a scene of discovery and chaos. Neither girl wants to believe that Harry could be Jess’s father, too, but there is that lingering doubt. Thus, I was hooked! With a family dilemma that is believable and perhaps life-changing for all involved. I really want to know if Lauren will finally break free of Simon, if Kate will finally be able to be a mother and if Jess is really their half-sister. What an intriguing first view!
