Not exactly what I thought it would be

Based on its opening, I thought Good Luck Girls would be a lot more complex. We begin with Clem, a young indentured sex worker for whom it's the first night on the job, killing her first John in an act of self-defense. Her friends jump to her aid and help her cover up the crime, and they decide to undertake an epic journey together in order to flee to safety.

This opening suggested that I'd be reading something like Westworld. Instead, I got a basic, uncomplicated adventure tale. At the very least, the title made me think that these girls would be independent young women who controlled their own fates. I was a little disappointed to find out that, in typical YA fashion, a guy had to jump in to act as their savior. Events also played out a little too perfectly. Without spoiling anything, basically, I thought Good Luck Girls would make a better PG/PG-13 Disney movie than a gritty HBO series.

If you don't go in expecting too much, then Good Luck Girls is entertaining, if predictable. 3.5/5.

Thanks to Bookish First and the publisher for sending me a paper ARC of this novel, which will be available for purchase on October 1st.
