The Godmothers by Monica McInerney is a heartwarming, funny and emotional family drama. The writing is so superb and the storyline is engaging that I was hooked from the first pages. The story follows Eliza Miller in her travels as she experiences life and discovers her true self. Eliza is greatly effected by her childhood being raised by her ‘troubled’ mother. As a young adult she has difficulty letting people in and has her feelings tightly locked away. When Eliza is invited to travel by one of her Godmothers, she takes the opportunity and it gives her an experience that changes her entire outlook on life.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the rich storytelling and beautiful writing. I didn’t always agree with Eliza’s thoughts and actions but she was likable. Eliza’s mother was difficult to handle, but I guess that’s life. My favorite characters were the Godmothers because they brought such humor and fun to the story. They are caring and down to earth but so much fun. I also loved Sullivan and I think they were they comic relief needed at times. Some of my favorite parts of the book had Sullivan. This story of family and friendship is wonderfully done. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
