I love the cover and title of this book -- it looks like a Children's or Y/A book for adults! Immediately, I realize that Eliza, as an eleven year old girl, has quite an unusual life. She and her mother move often, they communicate in lists, and Eliza's mother has never shared with her who her father is. However, she has chosen two godmothers for her, and they take holidays with her for several weeks each year. Once you've've gotten an impression of Eliza and her home life with mom, the narrative switches to Eliza as an adult, who has just being let go from her job. Eliza has built a life for her adult self that can be easily taken apart in case she needs to move, which tells us a lot. She receives a call from one of her godmothers that they want her to drop everything to come and visit. For the first time, she has no job to report to and answers "Yes!" Now, I'm hooked into finding out what the urgent visit is for, and what Eliza might discover This appears to be a book where the central character, raised by an unusual mother, has now had a life-altering change and embarks on some kind of urgent adventure, and I am all in! I suspect mother-daughter relationships, chosen family, identity, and unanswered secrets will play out in this book and the writing and language let me know I am in capable hands.
