I was a little hesitant to read this book due to the subject matter, but I am so glad that I did. Anna is a former ballerina suffering from anorexia, and it follows her story as she enters a treatment facility for her disease. It's a realistic look at the minute by minute struggles one has when dealing with an eating disorder. Anna went from limiting her diet to only eating popcorn and apples. Then she enters this facility and is forced to eat full meals with foods she has avoided for months and years. I loved the poetic writing style, and alternating between words in her head and the words she allows herself to speak out loud. The other girls in the house were portrayed realistically as well. As much as I wanted to hear more about their stories, I was cognizant that this was Anna's story and it should stay focused on her. I did like how the other girls were portrayed, and that it wasn't always a happy ending for everyone. I also appreciated how the book gave us hints of how hard the disease is on Matthias and her dad. The pages dedicated to her treatment plan were interesting and helpful to understand her growth and struggles in the minds of her therapists. Overall, this was an excellent book, but it raised questions in my mind about introducing foods back into the diet of an anorexic. Do they really expect someone to go from eating 500 calories a day to over 2000?? I need to research this.
