I wanted to really believe that Anorexia can really be cured because it is a horrible disease. I know that to really enjoy a book one needs to suspend belief, but this one needs to much belief suspended. The story takes the reader into a world that most will never understand or be a part of. The picture of a woman who is struggling with issuses that are explained but not fullly develped is well written. The characters that support her and love her are also well written but not particularly likable or relatable. For example, her husband is long suffering. His reason for being the way is, is never explored. Neither is her back story ever fully developed.
The author treats the disease as a simple misfortune that can be cured, or at least mitigated with living structure, group therapy and some one on one therapy. All simple tbhings that anyone can do. I have a feeling that there is more to the cure, if there is one, than this.
I had a difficult reading the book because I expected the author to do more in depth exploration of her characters. The one good thing about the book is that it showcases a disease that is all to common one in today’s world. It was just a shame that it was so shallow, the potential was there to be more nuanced.
