Beautiful
You don’t need to be familiar with eating disorders for this book to make your heart ache.
”I tell people I am a dancer. I have not danced in years, though. I work as a cashier in a supermarket, but my real occupation is anorexia.”
I have to admit that at times, I found Anna difficult to relate to. But anorexia is a mental illness, none of it is rational, and for those of us who have never experienced it, the disordered thinking can be very frustrating and jarring. I found the ending uplifting if not a bit unrealistic, but the heaviness of the book needed a good dose of measured optimism.
Really the only thing that bothered me was her all too on-the-nose name - Anna Roux. If she had been bulimic, would she have been named Mia Brioche? But I digress... this was a lovely, compelling, personal debut from an author I look forward to hearing more from.
