The cover for The Girls at 17 Swann Street is beautiful, striking, and understated. The designer could have easily gone with something obvious, like showing a woman’s ribcage or something like that (seen that done dozens of times) but I prefer this more subtle and sophisticated approach. There’s still a hint to the subject at hand, without beating us over the head with it all.
I will say that I can already tell that this is going to be a hard hitting book. It is absolutely going to trigger some people. Others it may help. The problem is that you might not know which category you fall into until you start. So I recommend exercising a healthy dose of caution before beginning.
The writing itself is beautiful. I love how the room was introduced just as much as the main character during that first chapter. There’s something elegant about that. I couldn’t quite explain why. I also like the way the chapters are formed, and how they alternate with different formats. It should help keep the pace going.
