Katherine Arden, the author of The Girl in the Tower, takes her readers to Medieval Russia. Arden does an excellent job of bringing her story to life. The way she describes the snow and the horse in the preface is absolutely beautiful. The way she introduces and describes Eudokhia Dmitreeva, Grand Princess of
Moscow, in the first chapter is spectacular. I can picture her in my mind's eye with a jewel incrusted dress and three blackened teeth.

I am typically a fan of Sci-Fi & Fantasy but I could not seem to get drawn into the plot of the story. There was so much going on in the tower during the first and second chapter, that I keep thinking back to the preface. I kept wanting to know what happened to the girl and her horse from the preface instead of hearing more of the ghost story and the story of the snow maiden from the first chapter. Perhaps if I had previously read the first book in this trilogy I would have been more interested in the plot but I doubt it.
