“That which you call magic is simply not allowing the world to be other than as you will it.”

I absolutely loved this book! Sometimes I worry when I start a series, because book 2 often doesn’t quite live up to how magical or all-encapsulating as the first. I’m pleased to say that this installment of the series had all the same wintery and whimsical vibes, full to the brim of Russian folklore, badass female character energy, and adventure aplenty.

Vasilisa continues to be an excellent protagonist as she is forced to leave home, disguised as a heroic young man. We have forest exploits, courtly intrigue, family dynamics, and self-discovery. Arden set up the third book beautifully, with a conclusion that makes me impatient to start the last book in the series!

This is definitely a book I plan to read again in the future, when I need some winter vibes.
