The writing in this sequel is just as taut and eloquent as in the first book. The characters are vivid and real, the language is descriptive. I was transported into the lives of the characters, experiencing the harsh winter, hearing the snow falling, feeling smothered by all the servants, visitors, and relatives pressing into a small tower room with only a single slit for a window. I understood how spooky a stone castle could be, especially when ghost stories were told, shadows traveled in firelight, and children slept far away from the safety of parents, with rats scratching in the walls. This is a book I wanted to savor, taking delicate bites, but knew immediately I'd devour, needing to know what happened next.
