This is the second book in Katherine Arden's Winternight Trilogy and it was just as satisfying as the first. Lately, lots of trilogies suffer from second-book fatigue where there just isn't enough material to really have an entire book dedicated to it and I was very pleased that this was not one of them. In this book, Vasilisa continues her journey in medieval Russia as she is driven from her childhood home and winds up in Moscow reunited with her sister and one of her older brothers. At this point, she has started to really grow into her power and the key role that she plays in the conflicts between the growth of Christianity and the native folklore of Russia. The author manages to weave magic into this world and yet keep it grounded in a way that allows readers to connect with the struggles and successes experienced by our characters. I would recommend this series to anybody who enjoys fiction, coming of age stories, or strong female characters.
