This is a book I want to read on a cold winters night. It has a creepy wonderful fairy tale feeling that deserves a blanket and a cup of hot coco. The wording choices are fun and unusual. They way the author describes the light falling out the door has me hooked. "A swath of firelight bloodied the virgin snow."

Plus, it looks as if each part has a beautiful illustration of a castle. It reminds me of the castle in the animated Sword in the Stone. But the story has an old world feel like Russia. Characters names include Olga, Vasya, and Konstantin Niconovick, which tell me I should never read them aloud. Just in my head. But it haves me very intrigued. I look forward to reading a retelling that is not extremely American and Disneyized.
