Could be a stand-alone
The Girl in the Tower is the second book in the Winternight trilogy. I haven’t read The Bear and the Nightingale yet but thought I would see what this book was like.
I can safely say that I really enjoyed it, the characters are all original and the bits of Russian folklore mixed in with the story really help make it come to life.
Honestly I think it could be one of the best historical fantasies I’ve read in a while, and I’ve read quite a few.
The sense of the atmosphere that you get is really quite amazing. From the description that Arden uses you can really feel the warmth of a room or the presence of a ghost or the smell of food.
Reading this has really made me want to read the first book, The Bear and the Nightingale. Hopefully I will be able to read it soon.
