I am judging this book without any idea of the first book 'The Bear and the Nightingale'. This is a trilogy, but based on what I have read I do believe the story is not strongly focused on the past events. It flows and moves forward and we follow our main protagonist on her adventure.
I thought this book would be about Olga and Sasha, but I checked the blurb of the first book and it's about Vasya but Sasha has his big role to play out too.
I loved the story of the snow maiden, it was very sad and I wish there would be more short stories/legends like it.
Based on the prose, and with my 4 star rating on three-chapter excerpt, I understand why this book has people talking.
