The story takes place in Fredericksburg, Texas. This little town is steeped in German tradition. It follows many colorful characters. Willow, whose father is the biggest builder in the town, but left her and her mother for a prettier women. She wants more than what this small town can offer her. Carel, is Willows father who wants to have a relationship with his daughter, but does not understand why she will have nothing to do with him. Mari is Willows mom who is stuck in a town with no way out. She drinks and goes out with men, leaving willow alone. She tries in her eyes to be a good mother, but you wonder at times who parents who. These characters are joined by a whole town of colorful characters that are stuck in the viscous circle of small town life. During the time of the Gillespie county fair some of these characters lives will change forever. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
