The story starts with a dawn fire that is a result of attempted insurance fraud. Carel Geische gets dressed and makes his way to the fire. He crosses the fire line, ignoring directives not to. He also correctly guesses that the fire was insurance fraud and convinces the owner that he will go to jail if he makes an insurance claim. As a way of supporting him, he offers to pre-date a letter of intent to buy the property.... When he's at the bank, trying to arrange (another) loan, he runs into his estranged daughter.
So far, I am not a fan of Mr. Geische and I'm wondering how the Gillespie County Fair will play into the story. There are a number of characters already introduced and just as many completed relationships.
