A slow ride through small town Texas

Similar to how I think a small town in Texas might be, Mr. Hess's story might start with a building burning down, but everything else is on slow burn. The main character's fight for a loan from the bank, his unstable history with his daughter. It all moves at a slow pace. Maybe a bit too slow for me.
