I was really excited when I heard about this book and finally picked it up earlier this month. I went in with a lot of expectations because of the hype around its release on bookstagram at the beginning of the year. I really wanted to like it - it had all of the pieces of books I tend to like: a unique and diverse cast of characters, a mystery or heist, a unique setting, magic. But ultimately this book fell short for me. It read a lot like Six of Crows, but not in a good way. I also felt like the world building was really confusing. There were all of these terms and aspects of the magic system that were kind of thrown out there but poorly explained. One of the characters isn't really a person? The magic is tied to rings or something? If I had to actually explain the magic system to someone I don't think I'd be able to which made the book a lot less enjoyable for me personally.
