I am seriously glad I gave this a second chance. I still had some instances where I accidentally tuned out but I loved this story this time around and the ending like shit. I need the sequel!

Okay this review is about to be super different from the one below so buckle up!

The Gilded Wolves is the start of a diverse historical fantasy series that follows a group of five misfits who are trying to make their way in a world that's discarded them for one reason or another. When they're leader, Severin, is trapped into a suspicious deal, they must all come together in order to prevent disaster.

For whatever reason, this time I really enjoyed the narrators. Though I swear to god Severin's name was pronounced 50 different ways and I don't even know what's right lmao. I really loved the found family aspect of this book. Especially seeing Severin wanting to keep them all with him, but also wanting them to succeed. He's such a sad boi and it gave me lots of feels.

The whole Order of Babel thing is very confusing, but I'm okay being confused. They kind of give me vibes like the Archivist in Ink and Bone. Originally they were great, but they've lost their mission and are only concerned with power and keeping it in the hands of the "elite". I really want to see if anything else will be discovered about the fallen House and House Vanth (Severin's house).

This was full of full history tidbits and seeing that Paris, France isn't all white people. This cast of characters is so diverse and it just brings even more history and complexity to the story. I am definitely eager to read the sequel!

I don't know how I feel about this book and it's been a whole day since I've finished it. Overall, it was just very okay. I did get a lot of Six of Crow vibes, but idk, it didn't work for me. I think part of the reason was that the male narrator's voice grated on my nerves. I don't know if it was the slightly nasal tone he had, but every time the POV switched to his narration I wanted to throw something.

Then there were the characters. Severin and Tristan I couldn't connect with. For whatever reason, they bothered me, especially Severin. The way his name pronounced was also just so weird and my ears didn't like it. Tristan didn't really seem to have a purpose besides to whine about everything especially his giant pet spider.

I liked the other characters: Enrique, Laila, Zofiya and Hypnos. Hypnos was so much fun, he livened up every scene he was in with his charm and sarcastic wit. Zofiya was basically an intelligent badass chemist and I loved her.

The whole plot line was fun, but the ending was so predictable. (view spoiler) There also wasn't really a huge historical vibe to me besides the setting of 1889 Paris. I didn't really even feel like I was in Paris besides the French names and accents of the narrators.
