This was such a fun book to dive into. I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from the descriptions I’ve read and from following the author on Instagram, but while it fulfilled every hope I had for it, it also surprised me a lot.

First of all, I absolutely adored the writing! It was beautiful and fun. You could tell that the author has real talent and was definitely having fun writing these great characters!

I loved the way the world worked and while there were moments where I didn’t fully understand why things were the way they were, I partially liked the mystery. I can also definitely see these aspects more fully developed in the next books. The plot was a bit chaotic as there were so many different things going on at once. My guess is that all of these things are to serve a greater purpose later in the series when it's revealed they are all connected plot threads.

I was expecting this book to end on a cliffhanger or at least to set up the next book with more than just “we’re going to this place soon for a few weeks so something will definitely happen.” There were obviously parts that were dramatic and I’m very excited to see the resolution for, but nothing close to the level I was expecting. I have heard that the second book has a more dramatic ending.

The found families trope is definitely one of my all time favorites and this books attempts that but with characters who have established relationships before the book begins. I don't usually find this to be a hinderance on my enjoyment and ability to love the found family, but this book seemed to be telling more than showing in terms of how much the characters cared for each other. I think knowing more about all of their backgrounds would have definitely helped this. We only really explored one character's background in depth while I was very interested in the others' as well.

I don’t know if this is confirmed, but I could see heavy influences from the Six of Crows duology but in a much lighter form.
