The German House gives the readers a lesser known perspective on World War 2.
Eva Bruhns is a young translator working with Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials in 1963. She is so hopeful for the future with her fiancé that makes her equally ignorant if the past. But when she learns the truth about how her family were involved with the horrors of the concentration camp, she is beyond shock and horror.
Eva is caught between societal and family expectations and her unique ability to speak the truth.
The book gives answers to why Eva’s family is silent on the war, why do they refuse to talk, what are they hiding. It also takes us through Eva’s questioning herself if she will be content being just a housewife.
Towards the end, there are few loose threads that as a reader, I felt were not tied properly. What happened to David? And why Annegret was not brought to justice.
