One of my favorite things about reading historical fiction is the realization that, when under duress, ordinary people easily become heroes or villains. The ordinary can quickly become extraordinary. I appreciate any author that can capture the humanity of people and that is what makes WWII-era fiction so fascinating. We all tend to imagine what our lives would be like, the people we would be under such circumstances. The little details in this book really captured me attention and drew me in, from the smell of burning rubber, to the squeals of tires and the light snowfall. I'm really interested in reading how Eva, a child of WWII, will fare in the aftermath as a young adult in a country torn apart.
