Very dense paragraphs, very serious topics
This no longer my type of book. Perhaps when I was an English major, I would have appreciated and read a serious book of this nature, but I no loner read true "literature", especially period pieces. I have little independent knowledge of this time period, and I suspect that readers like me would be lost in this story.
Forcing a marriage just to be married before a certain, living with your parents into adulthood, working only menial jobs as a woman... these are themes that I don't relate to and don't care to read about.
I like the writing, and the author knows how to tell a story and set up a scene, but I found it too dense for me. I drifted off mid-paragraph. I read to escape, not to burden myself with more thinking than I already do.
