The German House presents the story of a German woman named Eva roughly 20 years after World War II has come to an end. She is newly in love and hoping that her beau will soon ask her parents for their blessing. By day she works as a translator of legal documents from Polish to German, mostly focusing on contract law. Suddenly, her life is upended when she gets called in for a last minute job, translating in the trial against former SS members. This First Look indicates that her personal experiences of the war were limited and that she may not be aware of many of the atrocities that were committed by her countrymen. The set-up of the plot is for a powerful coming-of-age story. Eva will have to learn many hard life lessons while making major decisions about her own future. This First Look is well-plotted, but the lack of distinction between individual character perspectives was a little off-putting from a reader's perspective. I'd like to see more definition between the different characters in the finished product.
