An interesting and little-explored time in history

The German House sounds really interesting because there are many novels that explore the time of the World War II itself, but few that examine characters that were children during the war, like Eva. What is Germany like twenty years later and how have Germans, who were adults during the war, explained the atrocities to their children? The setting of the Frankfurt trials and the involvement of a young German are an interesting way to explore these questions.
