Dr. Euan Angus Ashley's The Genome Odyssey explores the scientific breakthroughs of the Human Genome Project, a decade-long scientific research project to identify and map all of the genes of the human genome. Part memoir and part science writing, The Genome Odyssey details the history of genome sequencing and Dr. Ashley's own role in decoding our full genetic makeup. Through Dr. Ashley and his team's efforts, we now have more reliable diagnosis and disease prevention as well as cheaper clinical tests to better predict our genetic future. Hard science writing, in general, has a tendency to be dense and dry. However, Dr. Ashley does a fantastic job of anchoring the technical writing to real human stories that illustrate the importance of genome sequencing. Additionally, Dr. Ashley writes in such a way and uses clever analogies to make the most esoteric and complicated subject matters easily understandable to the layperson. Overall, an excellent read.
