The Genome Odyssey by Euan Angus Ashley M.D., Ph.D. is a fascinating book about Genomes. Dr. Ashley makes a very difficult subject to understand palatable for this sixty-plus college educated English major. I find it fascinating how much has been discovered in my lifetime about genetics and how diseases can be cured by knowing the individual’s genome. In just a short time, the cost to discover an individual’s genome has become peanuts compared to the beginning.

Dr. Ashley starts with telling us about his childhood in Scotland growing up with a father who was a doctor and his mother was a mid-wife. He was allowed to go on house calls with his father...The book is divided in sections, and I found it is a book that I needed to read in chunks over time. Did I understand everything? No. However, I certainly am in awe of what has been discovered and where the future might lead. I appreciated all of the personal examples used for each topic.

My thanks to Celadon Books and BookishFirst for an ARC of this book. The opinions in this review are my own.
