This is an excellent hybrid of a memoir and a popular science book. The author balances the scientific explanations with stories of patients very smoothly. Unlike many other medical nonfiction books I’ve read, Ashley is able to eloquently tell patient and colleague stories in a way that captures their humanity without overly editorializing or adding unfounded extrapolations about feelings and impacts.

The explanations of genetics are very layperson-friendly, however I felt some were perhaps overly simplified and over-explained. They’re written on a level accessible to the general public, but I think most readers drawn to this book will already be familiar with certain concepts from the newspapers, blogs, radio, etc. they regularly consume.

(I received a copy of this book directly from the publisher, not via BookishFirst.!
