The Fury leaves me with mixed feelings. In some ways it’s similar to Michaelides’ first book, The Silent Patient, where there’s more to the relationship between the protagonist and the main female character. Perhaps intentionally it feels more like a production in The Fury, where the protagonist is a recognized playwright and the woman is a famous actress. The book is set up as a play, with the protagonist telling the story of a murder on a Greek island, claiming to tell the story as honestly as possible with the knowledge he has. And the reader quickly learns that Elliott is not so reliable, as well as prone to romanticizing his role and the relationships of the people on the island. Instead of the sense of unease and a sneaky reveal that comes in his debut this just feels more over-the-top. I suspected the first twist in the story and by the time the final one around it felt more predictable than like an actual twist. I didn’t really love the concept of a writer telling the story the way he wanted it to play out, but the story wasn’t bad. It just didn’t really meet my expectations after the first two books.
