I went into this with reserved expectations after reading and loving Alex Michaelides previous books, but seeing some readers not connecting with this one as much, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this story. The structure of this book mimics a five act play, and it draws on theatrical elements throughout the story, a great fit since the majority of the characters are actors or involved in theater. This one is a quick read with snappy, short chapters that keep everything moving. The characters in this one are interesting, however there are a couple that I would have appreciated being developed further. This doesn't hinge too heavily on the twists, but they are present and there are a decent number of surprises. Close readers will find the connections to Michaelides's previous books to appreciate. While this is not my new favorite by the author, I think it's a worthy addition to his list.
