It may not be fair to keep comparing Michaelides’ books to The Silent Patient, but I do. And so far, neither follow up has come close to matching that novel.
That aside, I do love a locked room mystery and this did it in a new and unique way on the island. I’m not sure there were any characters that I liked, but they were written in a compelling way that had me invested in the story. The unreliable narrator is always an interesting way to go, but he really leveled that up by having Elliot to right to the audience. I was totally guessing until the very end, and even then, I had to think about it to wrap my head around how this all worked out. It was clever, a good twist on the locked room, and the location was one that I really wanted to dive into myself. In the end I just wanted more from it that was delivered, but I’ll read anything that Alex Michaelides writes.
